Smoke Detectors and Alarms are one of the most important safety
items you can have in your home.
Install the alarms in bedrooms and other rooms in your house. Make sure there is one upstairs and downstais.
Maintain the alarms by checking the batteries once every month
and change the batteries twice per year.
Know what you will do if you hear a smoke alarm. Plan and
practice your HOME ESCAPE PLAN. Know TWO WAYS OUT.
-
Check your door to see if it
is hot before you open it.
-
Do the fire safety crawl.
-
Go to your meeting place or neighbors house and call
911.
Installing Smoke Alarms
-
Mount smoke alarms in the
middle of the ceiling, if possible.
-
For wall-mounted units,
place them at least 3' (1 m) from any corner and 4-6"
(10-15cm) from the ceiling.
-
Do not install smoke
alarms near heating or cooling ducts.
-
In mobile home units,
install smoke alarms on inside walls.
